Two of the most effective procedures for creating a youthful appearance are facelift and neck lift surgeries. Both procedures can dramatically reduce the visual signs of aging on the neck, face, and décolletage areas. Either procedure can provide instantaneous improvement to weak muscles and saggy skin around the face and neck.
According to multiple studies, patients who opt for face lift surgery will appear an average of 6 to 8 years younger post-surgery, and those who undergo neck lift surgery will typically see 10 to 15 years’ worth of aging reversed. It’s important to note that these two procedures are often performed in combination, yielding more significant benefits than either procedure will provide on its own.
Each of these cosmetic procedures share similar degrees of invasiveness as well as timelines for recovery. Both a facelift in Lincoln Park and a neck lift surgery have the potential to produce long-lasting results, provided the patient meticulously follows all aftercare instructions provided by their surgeon. It’s also beneficial to lead a healthy lifestyle post-procedure to facilitate the healing process as well as maintain the skin’s youthful appearance.
When your plastic surgeon discusses a facelift procedure, it’s usually in reference to a procedure that involves pulling the skin up at the cheeks towards the forehead. Although there are various types of facelift surgeries, the incisions are usually made in front of the ear. The procedure focuses on improving the lower portion of the face from the cheeks to the jawline – by correcting sagging skin and reducing wrinkles.
In contrast to a facelift procedure, neck lift surgery focuses on the area of the jowls and the jawline – and corrects draping skin on the front of the throat. Incisions are usually made behind the ears and below the chin, where they are effectively hidden. The neck lift can take years off of your appearance and is often combined with a facelift in Lincoln Park.
Unlike other treatments which can effectively manage one or two specific signs of aging, face and neck lifts resolve many different issues at once.
Skin that has lost its elasticity may hang from the jaw, resulting in a double chin or jowls. A facelift can help define your jaw and return a bold, youthful appearance.
Your face is probably the last place you want to see unsightly surgical scars. We carefully select locations for your incisions which will not only deliver the best results, but be easily concealed. Incisions for facelifts and neck lifts are typically tucked behind the ears or along the hairline.
If you’re considering another procedure, such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery, you may be able to pair it with a facelift or neck lift. Combining procedures helps patients get consistent, clock-rewinding results across their face and neck. This also allows for a single recovery process, leading to less overall downtime.
Many people decide against a facelift because they are afraid to look overdone, not realizing that the days of ‘wind tunnel’ face and neck lifts are in the past. Modern face and neck lifts provide natural-looking results that draw attention to you for all the right reasons.
While the range of time varies, most people will have youthful-looking results lasting seven to ten years. The length of time that your face or neck lift will last depends on a variety of factors, including how well you take care of your skin following the procedure, genetics, and personal habits.
Many people seek face or neck lifts to rectify an issue that’s been bothering them for some time. If you feel like signs of aging are keeping you from feeling your most confident, a face or neck lift may be a good option. Making a decision about what type of procedure will give you the results you want can be difficult without input from an expert. The length of surgery depends on whether you are having an upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both. Typically, the surgery will take 1-2 hours. Our doctor, one of the best eyelid surgeons in Chicago, can provide you with personalized information about the expected length of your procedure.
Blepharoplasties are generally performed on an outpatient basis, using local anesthetics. We recommend that patients arrange for another driver to pick them up from their appointment. It’s best to avoid driving for 5-10 days after your procedure, as you may experience swelling and be taking pain medication to manage symptoms.
Recovery for each person is different, which is why there is no exact recovery time available. Most people will experience some swelling and bruising for about seven to 10 days following the blepharoplasty procedure. The best eyelid surgeon at our facility recommends scheduling this surgery for a Friday and then taking the following week off, allowing for the 10 full days for recovery.
When you book your surgery you will also need to book a follow-up appointment to have your sutures (stitches) removed. Your doctor will examine your healing progress 3-5 days after the surgery and make a determination. Most people will have their stitches removed at this point, however for some a subsequent appointment may be necessary to safely remove them.
While many patients are anxious to return to their routines or conceal bruising caused by the procedure, it’s important to keep the area clean and avoid touching it as much as possible during healing. We typically recommend that patients avoid wearing eye makeup for 10-14 days after their surgery.
Whether you’re itching to go to the beach, dive into a pool, or soak in the bath—it will have to wait! We recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before fully submerging yourself in water; longer if you have open wounds. It’s best to wait a full month before dipping in a hot tub as they tend to contain more bacteria than pools.
Your eyelid lift surgery may improve your peripheral vision if your eyelids droop in such a way that your vision is impaired. In fact, if the first surgery does not improve your peripheral vision sufficiently, or your eyelids begin to droop again over time, you may be a good candidate for a follow-up surgery. Those who are seeking out blepharoplasty surgery for cosmetic purposes will not experience improved peripheral vision as a result of surgery.
If your vision is impaired by drooping upper eyelids, an upper eyelid lift may be covered by your insurance provider. Every insurance company is different, so check if your provider provides coverage. Often, your health insurance company will need some kind of proof that your vision is impaired. If necessary, Dr. Cohen will perform the tests and send the required proof to your provider if you are eligible.
